Rita Huni Kuin

Rita Huni Kuin is a visual artist, activist, and Indigenous leader from the Huni Kuin people of Acre, Brazil. Her work embodies the spirituality and worldview of her community through color, chants, and traditional designs, carrying the ancestral wisdom of the forest. As part of MAHKU – the Huni Kuin Artists’ Movement, Rita uses art as a form of resistance, intercultural dialogue, and healing. Born in Chico Curumim Village, she co-founded the Kayatibu Group, a collective uniting young Indigenous artists around visual arts and music. Her journey bridges art and activism, giving voice to the forest peoples while advancing women’s empowerment and the recognition of Indigenous women as keepers of knowledge and creativity. Rita currently serves as Secretary and Head of Institutional Relations at Instituto Ainbu Daya – the Association of Huni Kuin Women from Jordão, strengthening women’s leadership and autonomy across territories. Her art and activism weave together as a living expression of Huni Kuin women’s strength and the continuity of ancestral knowledge in the contemporary world.
